Duprevent Harm: Ancient Wisdom with Modern Technology
Torture Victim Relief Project
Torture - The Silent, Hidden Weapon
Torture is a weapon. It is used by anti-democratic forces to destroy political opposition and maintain power through fear. A major gap in education about torture exists. Programs are urgently needed to not only raise awareness, but also aid torture victims and halt this extreme violation of human rights.
The U.S. Torture Victims Relief Act (TVRA) first passed in 1998 authorized funds for torture treatment programs in the US and abroad to help torture victims reclaim their lives. TVRA helps support the treatment of torture survivors at 27 programs in the US and at nearly 200 centers in 70 countries around the world.
When Congress adopted the Torture Victims Relief Reauthorization Act of 2005, it recognized the significant and unmet needs of torture survivors. Dramatic increase in the number of torture
survivors seeking treatment within the US and abroad, however, makes obvious the need for increased funding and non-government victim advocacy and support. DDA EcoPeace International is helping to fill this gap.
